Central Coast Citizenship Project
My service learning was completed at a place named the Central Coast Citizenship Project. This organization made it their goal to recruit individuals who met the requirements for citizenship. By doing this they hoped to broaden the Hispanic voting base in California. My service at this organization was a pleasant experience that allowed me to interact with people from different places, although mostly Mexico. After spending time with leaders and participants of the organization, I feel like there are social responsibilities to help minorities in the United States achieve a legal voting status, by doing this I feel like voting in the United States will be better represented. Throughout my service my interaction with individuals was done speaking the Spanish language and this helped fortify my ability to speak fluently and proficiently. During my service at the Central Coast Citizenship Project I was also asked to translate and help teach a high ranking official at a local packing company. The goal was to help this individual refine and fine-tune his Spanish speaking abilities, which was a great success. I feel like the experiences gained from serving the community have allowed me to better understand some of the issues concerning communication in our society. The experience of dealing and interacting with individuals of different ages and races has given me the opportunity to realize that we live in an ever changing world and that Spanish, amongst other languages, is vital to the success of our country and the need for multi-language individuals is in high demand.
