MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge
The student develops an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and is able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether in writing or in speech.
- The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.
Major Learning Outcome 2 was met through a combination of courses which included Spanish Composition and Oral Practice and History/Phonetic Structure of Spanish Language. The Composition and Oral Practice class emphasized on written and oral presentation, the purpose of these methods of teaching were to refine the students ability to both write and communicate orally. This course helped students with the overall structure of written assignments and also helped them develop a structured format for orally communicating to large groups. The class stressed the importance of structure as well as information, claiming that a composition is only as good as the research and information provided in the text. . The course also allowed students to immerse themselves in learning about the importance of the evolution of the Spanish Language; it also demonstrated how the evolution of the Language has allowed for structural enhancements. The course placed and emphasis on structure, but it also stressed the importance of oral presentation and argumentation. The History of Phonetic Structure of Spanish Language course was also very instrumental in the furthering and development of student’s mastery of the Spanish language. This course taught students the importance of contributions from other languages, it also demonstrated how the language is a living language, in that, and it has the ability to morph and change with the speakers and times. This course helped students understand how vowels and consonants react when placed in different formats with one another, this process of understanding how letters act with one another helped many students with the fluidity of their speech. The material introduced in this course also helped with understanding how to properly enunciate letters, words and phrases. This course helped fulfill Major Learning Outcome 2 which encompasses the Language and Linguistic Knowledge outcome. Through the fulfillment of this class students developed a greater understanding for how the present day Spanish Language has evolved from a compilation of earlier Languages, like Latin, Arabic, and others. Overall, the course allowed the students learn about the evolution and morphology of the Spanish Language and put it into context through assimilating it to current events and their affect to the stability of governmental structures. After completion of these courses I found that I could possibly work on enhancing and refining written communication skills. I found that the structure and grammar of the language to be the most challenging, although, I feel like my overall communicating skills were further developed within the Major.
